Tomorrow is July 4th. That's Independence Day here in the States. I remember a poll a few years ago where they asked Americans when Independence Day was celebrated. Only about half of them knew. There was no follow-up question for the people that got it wrong. Something like "Why is the fourth of July such a big deal?" I'm really curious about what their answer would have been. I'm not even going to attempt a guess. My mind can't switch into "stupid" mode that readily without some alcoholic assistance. I am willing to bet that every immigrant who wants to become a citizen of this country can answer those questions without hesitation. But for all those Bubbas who will spend tomorrow afternoon drinking beer and firing bottle rockets at each other, it's just a day off of work. A three day weekend! Whooo! OK, I have to confess something...I plan on spending tomorrow afternoon drinking beer. There will be no bottle rockets involved, however. Real men use roman candles. I just want to make it clear, I don't consider myself more patriotic than the average American. I just wish that more Americans would appreciate what they have.
Thank you for your time.

“It ought to be commemorated,” said the man who would become our second president, “as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Day’s Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.” – John Adams, July 3, 1776
I remember that poll! As well as many other polls that proved the ignorance of the 'average' American!
I personally had to work on Independence Day but I appreciated all 10 hours of it! (without holiday pay)
The remainder of my day, I spent drinking my patriotic beer as I am free to do while watching someone else's fireworks from our deck.
God Bless America, Land That I Love!
